Periurbanization, agricultural livelihoods and ejidatarios: social capital lessons from a periphery municipality in Michoacán, Mexico

This research paper examines the role of social capital in supporting the agricultural livelihoods of ejidatarios in a peripheral municipality affected by the expansion of Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico. Using fifteen ejidos as units of analysis, the study explores how formal and informal institutionalized social relationships facilitate the mobilization of resources through trust and reciprocity.

• The study identifies that social capital, formed through formal and informal institutionalized social relationships, creates feedback loops of trust, reciprocity, and social engagement that allow farmers to mobilize resources for mutual benefit in the face of territorial transformations caused by urban expansion.
• Analysis of fifteen ejidos in a municipality affected by the growth of Morelia demonstrates that local institutional and non-institutional arrangements are critical for regulating how resources are distributed and accessed within peri-urban territories.
