Impactos de las políticas de conservación en los bosques secos tropicales: análisis regionales y con enfoque espacial ante diferentes impulsores sociales y naturales del uso de la tierra

The project assesses how conservation policies, specifically payments for environmental services and protected areas, impact tropical dry forest deforestation in Costa Rica and Brazil. It highlights that conventional evaluations often overestimate the success of protected areas by failing to control for biophysical and socioeconomic factors, such as slope and proximity to roads. Findings indicate that the location of protected areas is critical, with higher deforestation prevention occurring near urban centers and national roads compared to remote or steep areas.

• Conventional methods for evaluating the impact of conservation areas in Costa Rica have significantly overestimated the amount of avoided deforestation by more than 65% because they did not control for observable covariates correlated with both protection and deforestation.
• The effectiveness of protected areas in Costa Rica varies significantly by location: areas within 85 km of San Jose prevented over 4% of forest clearing between 1986-1997, while those further away prevented less than 1%. Additionally, protection within 7.5 km of national roads blocked approximately 5% of clearing, and land with slopes under 7.12 degrees avoided 14% deforestation.
• The perceived success of forest reserves may be confounded by non-policy drivers; parks were often established in remote, inaccessible, or steep locations that were already under less threat of clearing than other forest lands.
