Desarrollo de habilidades en grupos científicos interdisciplinarios mediante el estudio de los impactos socioecologicos de la generacion de bioenergia en las Americas

This project utilized a study of the socio-ecological impacts of bioenergy in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Uruguay, and the USA to build interdisciplinary teamwork skills among a group of 18 scientists and students. The initiative resulted in peer-reviewed publications, a free online workshop on transdisciplinary teamwork, and the collection of 1,800 interviews and surveys. The overarching goal is to improve policies for sustainable energy and socioecological resilience by enhancing how interdisciplinary teams address global change problems.

• The project focused on building interdisciplinary teamwork skills by studying the socio-ecological impacts of bioenergy development. The team consisted of 10 scientists and 8 students from social, natural, and engineering sciences who remained engaged over two years and were proficient in English and Spanish.
• In collaboration with an NSF PIRE team, the project conducted 800 qualitative interviews and 1,000 quantitative surveys regarding bioenergy project impacts in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Additionally, ecologists gathered data on the effects of bioenergy on pollinators and birds in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, with analysis still in progress.
• The project achieved several successes in interdisciplinary teamwork, including the publication of one article (with two others in preparation or under review), the development of a funding proposal and a student proposal for an IAI Seed Grant, and the creation of a free online workshop focused on international scientific teamwork and proposal development.
• The research aims to support policy improvements to maximize sustainable energy benefits and socioecological resilience while reducing negative impacts. It specifically tests how skill-building strategies for interdisciplinary science teamwork affect scientists' beliefs and their self-perceived efficacy in addressing global change problems.
