A fact sheet from the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research detailing the impact of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing on global fish stocks, economic losses, and the legal frameworks established to combat these practices.

• Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing causes an annual loss of 11 to 26 million tonnes of fish, representing an estimated economic value between US$ 10 billion and US$ 23 billion.
• IUU fishing contributes to overfishing, with 30% of the global fish population being caught above permitted levels. This disproportionately affects small-scale fishers, who constitute 90% of the global fishing workforce.
• In Latin America, 76.4% of the ocean remains unprotected according to the United Nations Statistics Division. To combat IUU fishing, the UN General Assembly designated June 5 as the International Day of Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing in December 2017, marking the entry into force of the Agreement on Port State Measures, the first legally binding international instrument dedicated to this issue.
