Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing results in the annual loss of 11 to 26 million tonnes of fish, valued between US$ 10 billion and US$ 23 billion. These practices contribute to overfishing, with 30% of the global fish population captured above permitted levels, disproportionately affecting small-scale fishers who comprise 90% of the global fishing workforce. In Latin America, 76.4% of the ocean remains unprotected according to UN Statistics.

• Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing causes significant economic and resource losses, estimated at 11 to 26 million tonnes of fish annually, with an economic value between US$ 10,000 and US$ 23,000 million.
• Overfishing is a consequence of IUU practices, with 30% of the global fish population being harvested beyond allowed levels. This impacts the 90% of the global fishing workforce who are small-scale fishers and threatens species dependent on specific marine food sources.
• Despite progress in Latin America, the United Nations Statistics Division reports that 76.4% of the ocean in the region remains unprotected.
