Conflictos por la tenencia de la tierra en la provincia de Santiago del Estero: su relación con los cambios en el uso de la tierra

This research paper chapter examines the relationship between land-use changes (LUC) and land tenure conflicts in the province of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, between 2001 and 2010, within the broader context of deforestation in the Gran Chaco region.

• Deforestation in the Argentine portion of the Gran Chaco xerophytic forests is occurring at annual rates between 1.5% and 2.5%, which is significantly higher than the global average of 0.2% and the continental average of 0.51%. The provinces of Salta and Santiago del Estero currently exhibit the highest deforestation rates.
• Land-use changes in the Chaco region are partly driven by a productive reconfiguration in the Pampean region over recent decades, which has led to increased land disputes and conflict within the rural spaces of the Chaco region.
