GreenLatinos Remembers and Honors the Life of Maestre Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo

The document commemorates Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo, a pioneering nonbinary magistrate in México who advocated for LGBTQ+ visibility and legal recognition. It details their achievements in securing nonbinary identification and their role in the Aguascalientes state electoral court. The text highlights the violence faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals in México and Latin America, noting the deaths of Baena Saucedo and their partner, Dorian Herrera, on November 13, 2023, and the killing of activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán in Atlanta. GreenLatinos frames these struggles within a broader fight for justice and environmental liberation.

• Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo was a pioneer for nonbinary rights in México, becoming the first openly nonbinary person to serve as a judge in the country and the first nonbinary maestre in Latin America, serving in the Aguascalientes state electoral court starting October 1, 2022.
• Baena Saucedo achieved several legal firsts in México, including obtaining the first nonbinary birth certificate in Coahuila and a nonbinary gender Mexican passport, which helped establish the use of the gender-neutral marker X on identification documents.
• México is identified as the country with the second highest number of hate crimes in Latin America, with 305 documented acts of violence against LGBTIQ+ people between 2019 and 2022.
• Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo and their partner, Dorian Herrera, were found dead in their home on November 13, 2023, following over a year of threats. The group Letra S has called for an investigation by the Aguascalientes Prosecutor’s office to determine if the deaths were a hate crime.
• The document links the violence against LGBTQIA+ leaders to the persecution of land and water protectors in Latin America, citing the example of Manuel (Manny) “Tortuguita” Esteban Paez Terán, a non-binary Indigenous Venezuelan killed by Georgia state police while defending the Weelaunee forest in Atlanta.
