GreenLatinos Statement on the Nomination of Debra Haaland for Secretary of the Interior

GreenLatinos supports the nomination of Representative Debra Haaland for Secretary of the Interior, noting that her confirmation would make her the first Indigenous person to lead a Cabinet-level Department. The organization argues that her leadership is a vital step in ensuring that Indigenous Peoples and traditionally overlooked communities, including Latinos, are prioritized in conservation efforts.

• The nomination of Representative Debra Haaland is significant because, if confirmed, she would be the first Indigenous person to lead a Cabinet-level Department in United States history.
• GreenLatinos views the nomination as a necessary shift in how Washington DC operates, particularly given the Department of the Interior's trustee obligations to Native Hawaiians, Native Alaskans, Tribal Nations, and Indigenous Peoples.
• The organization believes Rep. Haaland's experience as chairperson of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands qualifies her to ensure that traditionally overlooked communities are placed at the forefront of conservation discussions.
