Solidarity in an Age of Shocks

The text examines the intersection of the cost of living crisis, geopolitical shocks, and climate change in Europe, advocating for a 'social core' to the Green New Deal to ensure a just energy transition.

• The current cost of living crisis in Europe is driven by a combination of the pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, climate-induced disasters such as droughts and floods, and an economic system that allows for significant financial speculation.
• Rising inflation, particularly in energy and transport prices, is increasing poverty and social instability in Europe, potentially fueling far-right political gains and reigniting social conflicts similar to the gilets jaunes movement.
• Green politics should reject narratives of austerity and instead promote a 'social core' for the Green New Deal, focusing on social protection, redistribution, and the creation of shared institutions like renewable energy cooperatives to ensure resilience.
• The transition away from fossil fuels in Europe, accelerated by solidarity with Ukraine, requires deepened social solidarity and public investment in the common good to succeed.
