Le débat identitaire occulte le vrai débat européen

The text analyzes how contemporary European political discourse uses the opposition to Islam to mask a contradiction between 1960s liberal values and traditional Christian identity. It argues that populist movements use Christianity as a mere identity marker rather than a spiritual guide, which paradoxically accelerates the secularization of Europe. The author contends that both pro-European and leftist parties fail to adequately address the role of religion, leaving the definition of European identity to be dominated by populist rhetoric.

• European populist movements have shifted their focus toward the rejection of Islam and immigrants, often replacing traditional fascist references or regionalist claims with a narrative of cultural incompatibility.
• There is a fundamental contradiction between the two sets of values currently used to define European identity: the liberal values of the 1960s (such as feminism and LGBTQ+ rights) and traditional Christian norms, which the 1960s cultural revolution sought to break.
• The hostility toward Islam paradoxically increases the secularization of Europe because legal efforts to ban Islamic symbols often ban all religious signs, or treat Christian symbols as mere cultural markers without spiritual meaning.
• Political parties across the spectrum are failing to address the role of religion in Europe; pro-European parties remain too abstract, while leftist parties rely on a concept of multiculturalism that no longer aligns with how religion functions.
