Connecting Industry Creating Opportunity

The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) is a free service delivered by GreenCape and initiated by the Western Cape Government. It employs an industrial symbiosis approach to match unused resources—including energy, water, and materials—from one company to another to create economic and environmental benefits. The programme specifically targets gaps faced by SMEs in implementing resource and energy efficiency, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions and landfill costs while increasing profits and innovation.

• WISP operates as a free facilitation service that applies an industrial symbiosis approach, defined as a resource efficiency method where the residual resources of one company—such as energy, water, materials, assets, logistics, and expert knowledge—are utilised by another company for mutual benefit.
• The programme is designed to support businesses, particularly SMEs, by overcoming barriers such as lack of time or dedicated expertise required to implement energy, waste, and resource efficient practices.
• WISP aims to deliver specific environmental and economic outcomes, including the reduction of CO2 emissions, industrial water usage, hazardous waste, pollution, transport, and landfill costs, while increasing jobs, sales, and inward investment.
