Value-add to livestock value chain residues South African Case Studies

A collection of five South African case studies detailing value-addition methods for livestock value chain residues, focusing on biogas production, insect protein, and composting.

• Two case studies demonstrate the use of livestock manure for biogas production: Zandam Piggery & Cheese uses pig manure to produce heat, digestate, and electricity of ≤100 kW with a capital cost of approximately R9 million, while Uilenkraal Dairy uses cattle manure to produce heat, digestate (composted with sawdust for bedding), and electricity of ≤400 kW with a capital cost of approximately R10 million.
• Insect protein production is highlighted through AgriProtein and Khepri Innovations. AgriProtein processes "clean organic waste" using fly larvae to create MagMeal (soy/fish-meal substitute), MagOil, MagSoil, and Whole Dried Larvae, with estimated capital costs between R60 and R100 million for 100 t/day feed. Khepri Innovations operates on a smaller scale, utilizing solar energy for larvae drying and conducting trials with abattoir waste as feedstock.
• The Robertson Abattoir implemented open wind-row composting of approximately 10 t/d of abattoir and green waste in response to tightened waste regulations, high management costs, and a lack of existing solutions.
