Groundwater use in business

• Woolworths Head Office in Cape Town utilizes an underground river via 5 seepage pumps, treated with Reverse Osmosis and UV, to provide potable quality water for air conditioning, car washing, and toilet flushing across 5 buildings. This system, installed in 2010 at a cost of R1.2 million, saves approximately 1,500 kl/month (18,000 kl/year), representing 60% of water usage.
• The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel in Seapoint uses a wellpoint to source groundwater for toilet flushing. The system includes filtration, chlorination, and rooftop storage, costing R100,000 when installed in April 2016, and reduces municipal water for toilet flushing by 41%, saving approximately 225 kl/month (10% of water usage).
• K-way Manufacturers in Ottery employs a wellpoint for groundwater used in toilet flushing, featuring an aeration system for odours installed in 2010. The system cost less than R30,000 and saves 125 kl/month (1,500 kl/year), with plans to install a similar system at the Paardeneiland Keedo factory.
