GOF PHASE II Proposal

The GOF Phase II proposal seeks to raise USD 3-5 million in grant funding to leverage USD 15-20 million in private capital for green SMMEs in South Africa. Building on Phase I, which created 946 green jobs and achieved a 5x catalysation multiplier, the fund aims to de-risk investments in innovative green sectors to drive job creation. GreenCape serves as the fund manager, with design support from the Anglo American Foundation and evaluation from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet.

• GOF Phase I demonstrated a catalysation multiplier of 5x, blending approximately R58m of grant funding from the Jobs Fund and FirstRand Foundation to attract R290m of private capital.
• Phase I of the fund supported 14 SMMEs and resulted in the creation of 946 green jobs, with a grant cost of approximately R90,000 awarded per direct green job.
• The primary objective of the GOF is to increase the volume and value of available capital by using an outcomes mechanism to de-risk investments into innovative green SMMEs, specifically focusing on job creation during the transition to a green economy.
• The Anglo American Foundation supported the design phase of GOF Phase II, and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) is currently evaluating the funding proposal for the second phase.
