GOF PHASE II Proposal

The GOF PHASE II Proposal by GreenCape seeks to establish a grant facility of USD 3-5 million to attract USD 15-20 million in private capital investments for small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs) focused on the green economy.

• The Green Outcomes Fund (GOF) Phase II aims to raise a grant facility between USD 3-5 million to catalyze private capital investments of approximately USD 15-20 million into small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs).
• In Phase I, the GOF blended approximately R58 million in grant funding from the FirstRand Foundation and the Jobs Fund to attract R290 million in private capital, achieving a catalysation multiplier of 5x. This phase supported 14 SMMEs and created 946 green jobs.
• The primary objective of the GOF is to de-risk capital investments in innovative green SMMEs through an outcomes mechanism, specifically emphasizing job creation during the transition to a green economy.
• Launched in January 2020, the GOF is an outcome-based facility designed to encourage local South African fund managers to increase investments in emerging green SMME sectors. During Phase I, the grant cost per direct green job was approximately R90,000.
• The Anglo American Foundation supported the design phase of GOF Phase II and is exploring funding opportunities, while the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) is currently evaluating the funding proposal for the grant facility.
