Municipal Snapshot

This fact sheet provides a municipal snapshot of the Drakenstein Municipality (DM), detailing the critical constraints water scarcity and climate change pose to its future economic development, urban growth, and agricultural productivity by 2040.

• Water is projected to be a major constraint for future development in the Drakenstein Municipality due to the combination of rapid urban growth, climate change, and a high concentration of high-value irrigated crops, specifically stone fruits and wine grapes.
• Urban water requirements in the Drakenstein Municipality are expected to increase by 129% by 2040, which will place critical pressure on the water supply. This growth rate is among the highest in the region at 2.2%.
• Climate change is forecast to increase agricultural water needs in the Drakenstein Municipality by 32% between 2015 and 2040. Specifically, water requirements for stone fruit and grapes are expected to rise by 29% and 34% respectively by 2040.
• The Drakenstein Municipality has the highest total water requirement outside of Cape Town and is the largest user of irrigated water, with grapes accounting for 80% of all irrigated water used in the municipality.
• The water supply deficit is estimated to reach approximately 57.9 million m3 per year by 2040, up from approximately 34.1 million m3 per year by 2025. By 2040, this deficit is projected to cost the local economy roughly R10.5 billion per annum (58% of the current local economy size) and 57,218 jobs per annum (62% of current local employment).
