Reducing water use in the beverage industry

A case study by GreenCape detailing how Quality Beverages, a soft drink manufacturer in Cape Town, reduced its water use by 27% through staff education and the reuse of bottle rinsing water.

• Quality Beverages achieved a 27% reduction in water use, decreasing consumption from 1.77 litres per litre of soft drink produced in the latter half of 2016 to 1.30 litres per litre in 2017. This resulted in a 61% decrease in waste water production.
• The company implemented two primary interventions to save water: an educational campaign for staff that included water consumption targets, and the collection, filtration, and reuse of waste water from bottle rinsing processes in other stages of production.
• To further reduce reliance on municipal water supply, Quality Beverages plans to augment its water supply using groundwater and rainwater.
