Repurposing berm and building rubble for use in construction projects

This case study describes the repurposing of 19,600 tonnes of builders' rubble from a historical berm in Hermanus, Western Cape. Iselula Crushing processed the material for use in local construction projects, including schools and a mall, resulting in significant material and landfill cost savings.

• Iselula Crushing processed 19,600 tonnes of rubble from a historical berm in Hermanus for use in various construction projects. The material was used as fill for a secondary school site in Stilbaai, as fill and G5 material for roads and parking lots at a school in Hermanus, and for sidewalks. Additionally, WA Bishop Transport used screened fill for projects around Hermanus and screened oversize/pioneer aggregate for drainage at a new local mall.
• The project generated financial savings totaling R2.4 million in material costs (calculated as the cost of virgin material minus the cost to crush and reuse rubble) and R2.1 million in landfill costs.
• The initiative initially created four temporary jobs, which later became permanent positions due to an increasing demand for builders' rubble as a secondary construction material.
