Case Study 009 Fabricating Innovation

This case study describes a collaboration facilitated by the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) between Farbe Designs, a clothing company, and CSK Material Handling, a recycling company. The partnership established a system to divert textile, plastic, and paper waste from landfills in the Western Cape, transporting materials to KwaZulu-Natal for processing into carpet underfelt and other recycled products.

• Farbe Designs, a clothing company based in Stellenbosch, produces approximately 2 tonnes of underutilised textile, plastic, and paper resources every month.
• CSK Material Handling operates a baling facility in Epping, Cape Town, and currently bales about 80 tonnes of textile waste per month, with the capacity to expand this volume.
• Because there is no textile recycler located in the Western Cape, materials collected by CSK are transported to KwaZulu-Natal, where textiles are shredded into fibres for carpet underfelt manufacturers.
• The partnership facilitated by WISP resulted in the annual diversion of 20 tonnes of textile, paper, and plastic waste from landfills, saving 400 tonnes of fossil greenhouse gases and providing Farbe Designs with potential annual waste service cost savings of R8 000.
