Intensification of Agriculture and Agroforestry Techniques (IAAT) for Climate Resilient Food and Nutrition Security: Tombouctou, Gao, Mopti, Koulikoro and Segou regions of Mali Mali
Summary
The IAAT project aims to support 431,700 direct beneficiaries in Mali by promoting Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and agroforestry. The initiative focuses on improving extension services, developing inclusive value chains, and deploying low-carbon technologies such as solar irrigation and biodigesters. It targets a total GHG emission reduction of 2,446,543 tCO2eq over 15 years and the planting of 91,285 hectares of agroforestry trees. The project is implemented by Save the Children in collaboration with the Government of Mali, leveraging a Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) approach and synergies with the USAID-funded Albarka project.
Key insights
- Mali is highly vulnerable to climate change, ranking 11th most vulnerable and 23rd least ready for adaptation globally according to the ND-GAIN index. Historical trends show a mean annual temperature increase of 0.15°C per decade since the 1960s.
- Agriculture is the primary source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Mali, accounting for between 70% and 80% of total national emissions, which were estimated at 44 million tons of CO2eq in 2022.
- The project targets a total GHG emission reduction of 2,446,543 tCO2eq over a 15-year lifespan. This includes 1,668,656 tCO2e from 21,585 hectares of improved agroforestry on private land, 646,320 tCO2e from CSA practices, and 131,566 tCO2eq from solar pumps and biodigesters.
- The project will reach 431,700 direct beneficiaries (including 86,340 farming households) and 700,980 indirect beneficiaries across 48 communes in 12 circles within five regions: Gao, Koulikoro, Mopti, Segou, and Tombouctou.
- A core objective is the expansion of agroforestry, with a target to plant 91,285 hectares of trees, specifically targeting value chains such as acacia Senegal and shea. This includes 21,585 hectares on private land and 69,700 hectares of degraded public lands.
- The project will deploy 1,000 solar irrigation systems and 5,000 biodigester systems using a Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) model to make these technologies affordable for smallholder farmers.
- To address technical gaps, the project will train 500 public and private extension agents on a new curriculum covering 22 priority CSA and agroforestry techniques.
- The project aims to empower women and youth by establishing 900 new Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), with 30% dedicated to youth, and providing business training to 5,250 entrepreneurs.
- Institutional capacity will be strengthened by integrating adaptation and mitigation planning into the Economic, Social, and Cultural Development Plans (PDESC) of 48 communes and supporting the Mali Climate Fund (MCF).
- The total project budget is USD 43,717,918, consisting of a USD 33,717,918 GCF grant and USD 10 million in co-financing (USD 5 million in-kind from the Government of Mali and a USD 5 million grant from USAID's Albarka project).
