Adaptation planning

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) provides grants of up to USD 3 million to support developing countries in creating National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and other adaptation planning processes. As of October 2022, GCF had approved 87 such proposals valued at USD 193 million. The fund aims for a 50:50 balance between adaptation and mitigation in its portfolio, prioritizing vulnerable regions including Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and African States.

This funding can be accessed via a single proposal with one Delivery Partner or through multiple sequential proposals to allow for an iterative 'learn by doing' approach.
• As of October 2022, the GCF Readiness Programme had received 131 adaptation planning proposals, approved 87 of them with a total value of USD 193 million, and had 44 proposals under review.
• The GCF identifies three key lessons for successful proposals: strong country ownership through National Designated Authority (NDA) leadership, high quality at entry to reduce approval time, and responsiveness to GCF review feedback.
