Risk, Resilience and Regulatory Lab (R3LAB)

The Risk, Resilience and Regulatory Lab (R3LAB) is a platform designed to enhance the capacity of insurance regulators and supervisors across Africa through collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the development of customized capacity-building programs.

• R3Lab serves as a collaborative platform for African insurance regulators to create an enabling regulatory environment. It provides specific tools including customized capacity-building programs, a peer-to-peer exchange platform, a resource centre, a learning toolkit, data collection and reporting, and topical forums and taskforces.
• The project aims to improve the technical capacity of supervisory staff and the implementation of proportionate regulatory practices. Its objectives include fostering networking among peers and senior supervisors to resolve current and emerging regulatory issues, and building a multinational team of experienced leaders in supervision.
• FSD Africa has developed eight insurance innovation portraits to identify barriers to innovation and recommend action plans for eight countries. These portraits evaluate the enabling environment based on six areas: supervisory support, the regulatory environment, market engagement enablers, access to finance, access to talent, and underlying infrastructure.
