Promoting an African voice for the Taskforce on Nature Related Disclosures (TNFD) and nature-related financial risk management

This report describes a project to integrate an African perspective into the Taskforce on Nature Related Disclosures (TNFD). The initiative focuses on quantifying the economic impact of nature—noting that 23% of Africa's GDP depends on it—and piloting frameworks to help African financial institutions manage nature-related physical and transition risks.

• The project aims to establish an 'African Voice' on nature and ensure the TNFD is fit-for-purpose through three workstreams: creating an academic justification for the TNFD and financial institution action on natural capital protection; piloting the TNFD framework to provide feedback and build capability for African financial institutions; and utilizing the African Natural Capital Alliance (ANCA) for policy, regulatory engagement, and sustainable development discourse.
• Protecting natural ecosystems is considered imperative for preserving economic growth because 23% of Africa's GDP is dependent on nature.
• Initial project activities included collaborating with economists and consultants to quantify the impact of nature on underlying loan book value for the first time, and testing these results with industry partners across various sectors, asset classes, and geographies to understand the impact of physical and transition risks on aggregate profits.
