FSD Africa Impact

The BimaLab accelerator programme supported the Kenyan insurtech MotiSure in refining its customer profiling and product design for bodaboda riders. This led to an expanded insurance offering covering medical expenses, income loss, disability, death, and repairs, with premiums as low as Sh10 (USD 0.06) per day. Following the programme, MotiSure grew its customer base from 4,600 to over 12,000 riders, maintaining an 85% retention rate. MotiSure aims to expand into six African countries within three years and 13 countries by the end of six years, while aspiring to eventually become a re-insurer for micro-insurers.

• The BimaLab accelerator enabled MotiSure to transition from a 'pay-as-you-drive' concept to a more targeted product based on deep customer profiling, expanding coverage to include medical expenses, loss of income protection, disability, death, and repairs, as well as insurance for passengers and goods.
• MotiSure experienced significant growth in its user base after participating in BimaLab, increasing from approximately 4,600 customers to over 12,000 bodaboda customers, with a retention rate of about 85%.
• MotiSure's insurance is designed for affordability, with daily costs as low as Sh10 (USD 0.06), addressing the vulnerability of riders in Kenya where 4,976 motorcyclists died and 11,187 were injured between 2017 and 2022.
• MotiSure has set a growth trajectory to operate in at least six African countries within the next three years and expand to approximately 13 countries by the end of the sixth year, with a long-term goal of becoming a re-insurer for micro-insurers.
