SECURING CLEAN AND AFFORDABLE ENERGY

This case study describes a partnership between FSD Africa and the Infrastructure Credit Guarantee Company Limited (InfraCredit) to provide local funding for DarwayCoast, a solar power company in Nigeria. The initiative focuses on scaling solar mini-grids to increase energy access and promote climate action financing through a credit guarantee model.

• A partnership between FSD Africa and Infrastructure Credit Guarantee Company Limited (InfraCredit) has facilitated 1.6 billion Naira in local funding for DarwayCoast, a solar power company in Nigeria, to scale its solar mini-grids.
• By September 2023, DarwayCoast had established six mini-grid projects across two locations: two in Lokpaukwu, Abia State, and four in Rivers State. These projects are expected to connect 7,711 households and produce 541.76 kW of solar energy.
• The project has created employment for 227 people, consisting of 196 males and 31 females.
• FSD Africa provided $21,000 to cover green certification costs for companies like DarwayCoast, addressing the challenges of securing capital for greenfield infrastructure projects which often face local interest rates as high as 27%.
• InfraCredit utilizes a gender action plan to promote inclusion in project design and has achieved an internal gender ratio of 48% women.
