FSD Africa climate finance training spurs new mindset in Africa

This fact sheet describes the Climate Finance Training Programme created by Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Africa to address the green funding gap in Africa by building the capacity of policymakers, regulators, and financial experts to access climate funds and design financial products.

• FSD Africa established the Climate Finance Training Programme to increase the capacity of African financial sector experts, regulators, and policymakers to design financial products and policies that mitigate climate change costs and address the region's green funding gap.
• The training programme has reached 70 officials and 31 students from 13 institutions across 11 countries.
• The programme aims to facilitate a 16-fold increase in investments within sub-Saharan Africa, with a projected funding split of 40% from climate funds, such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and 60% from private sector financing tools.
• A primary barrier to African countries benefiting from the GCF and other climate funds is a lack of capacity within national environmental entities, necessitating institutional capacity building and the accreditation of direct access entities (DAEs).
• In Ethiopia, the training targeted staff from the National Bank of Ethiopia, the Ethiopia Roads Authority, and the Ministry of Finance to encourage the fast-tracking of DAEs accreditation and the future issuance of green bonds.
