FSD Africa Impact KaroPay: ‘BimaLab accelerator reǾned our start-up idea’

This case study describes how the BimaLab insurTech accelerator, backed by FSD Africa and the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) of Kenya, supported the startup KaroPay in developing insurance-linked credit solutions for education in Kenya.

• The BimaLab accelerator provides startups and innovators with practical support for venture development, including training, mentorship, coaching, and policy advocacy, to help shape the future of insurance in Africa.
• KaroPay utilized the BimaLab accelerator to transition from a primary focus on credit to the development of solution-oriented insurance products, specifically microinsurance policies for education in Kenya.
• KaroPay's M-Soma savings product allows parents to save as little as Sh10 toward school fees to build a credit score for an overdraft facility; this product includes a free life insurance cover to ensure children can continue their education in the event of the parent's death.
• The Kenyan insurance market is characterized by low penetration, with coverage levels below 3%, due to traditional providers offering high-priced and inadequate products.
• BimaLab has contributed to Kenya's emergence as a regional hub for insurance and financial services innovation by facilitating information exchange and providing access to global mentorship, such as guidance from a senior manager at NuaPay.
