Carbon Value Exchange Platform (CaVEx)

The Carbon Value Exchange Platform (CaVEx), developed by 4R Digital with funding from FSD Africa, is a cloud-based digital marketplace designed to enable small-scale climate projects to participate in voluntary carbon markets through distributed ledger technology and mobile payments.

• CaVEx is a cloud-based digital marketplace designed to facilitate the entire lifecycle of carbon credits for small-scale projects, including the collection and verification of climate data, the conversion of that data into credits via distributed ledger technology, the sale of credits to buyers, and the direct transfer of funds to projects through mobile payments.
• FSD Africa supported the initiative by providing grant funding to 4R Digital for a proof of concept and detailed use cases, followed by pre-seed capital to build the platform and prepare for a seed capital raise. The platform's development includes testing use cases such as a rechargeable batteries project in Senegal and a solar powered water pump project in Kenya.
• As of October 2022, the platform was under development with a minimum viable product (MVP) planned for September 2022. Current status includes presence in Kenya and Senegal, two 'live' platform users being tested, and one established buy-side partnership. Long-term goals for the platform include onboarding over 50 projects, operating in at least 6 markets, accounting for over 6 million tonnes of CO2e, and accessing more than $100 million in climate finance.
