Financial Inclusion Using Agency Banking Project

The Financial Inclusion Using Agency Banking Project (2019-2022), funded by FCDO and implemented by Equity BCDC in the DRC, aimed to increase financial access for unbanked rural and peri-urban populations. By May 2022, the project had deployed 2,982 agents, disbursed over $1m in loans to MSMEs, and created financial awareness for over 8.2 million people.

• The Financial Inclusion Using Agency Banking Project, funded by FCDO with £1,169,001.50 and implemented by Equity Banque Commerciale du Congo SA (BCDC) between 2019 and 2022, aimed to expand financial access in the DRC's rural and peri-urban areas. The project focused on scaling an agency banking model to provide savings and loan products while building capacity for MSMEs, farmers, women, and youth.
• As of May 2022, the project achieved several of its target results, including the deployment of 2,982 agents (against a target of 3,317) and the disbursement of over $1m in loans to underserved or unserved MSMEs. It also opened 155,008 savings accounts and trained 80 bank staff in agricultural finance and agency banking.
• The project significantly exceeded its target for creating financial awareness, reaching 8,232,834 unbanked farmers, MSMEs, women, and youth, compared to the original target of 200,000.
