Going for Inclusive Growth: Building Capital Market Capacity for the Long Term in Tanzania

A case study detailing a 2014 capacity-building initiative in Tanzania's capital markets, delivered by FSD Africa and the London Stock Exchange (LSEG) Academy to enhance professional skills and market infrastructure.

• Between January and December 2014, a training program delivered by the LSEG Academy provided skills development to 103 professionals from the Dar Es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), Capital Markets & Securities Association (CMSA), the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Prime Minister, and local brokers. To ensure sustainability, 14 Tanzanian trainers from the University of Dodoma and the University of Dar Es Salaam were also trained.
• The training program showed measurable improvements in practitioner knowledge, with overallSSSS. In Phase 2, test scores rose from 58% on entry to 84% on exit, and in Phase 3, they rose from 69% on entry to 77% on exit. Overall satisfaction for the training was rated at an average of 4.8/5.
• The initiative contributed to systemic developments in the Tanzanian capital market, including the CMSA signing an MoU with the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) in September 2014 to develop a new qualification for East Africa. Additionally, the DSE reported a 30% increase in total market capitalisation, two new listings, and increased market liquidity between January and December 2014.
