Revolutionising the healthcare insurance landscape in Ethiopia

A case study detailing how Saglan Wajee General Hospital, supported by FSD Africa’s BimaLab Insurtech Accelerator Program, launched 'Efoy', a micro-health insurance product aimed at low- and middle-income families in Ethiopia.

• Saglan Wajee General Hospital launched Efoy, a micro-health insurance product for low- and middle-income families, after receiving venture-building support from FSD Africa’s BimaLab Insurtech Accelerator Program. This support helped the hospital secure a license from the National Bank of Ethiopia, which had not issued health insurance licenses for 14 years.
• The Efoy insurance product has seen growth across two versions. Efoy 1.0 attracted over 1,200 customers in its first year with initial annual premiums of 400 birr (4 USD) per child and 800 birr (8 USD) per adult. The upgraded Efoy 2.0 expanded coverage to include segmented services for individuals, families, and chronic patients, reaching 900 new clients.
• Saglan Wajee plans to scale its operations by integrating 130 health facilities into its insurance network and opening a new branch in Addis Ababa.
