VUA Inc: A Story of Resilience and Innovation

VUA Inc. is a social enterprise addressing the financial instability of small-scale fishers in Kenya, who face irregular incomes and limited access to formal credit. Supported by $55,000 in seed capital from the Triggering Exponential Climate Action (TECA) programme, VUA Inc. piloted a platform on Kiwayu Island that allows 38 fishermen to save during high seasons for use during lean periods. The enterprise also provides an AI-powered financial literacy tool, a small-scale loan programme for sustainable fishing equipment, and hygiene training to improve product value and environmental practices.

• Small-scale fishers in Kenya experience significant economic vulnerability due to seasonal income fluctuations and a lack of financial services; a 2022 FAO report indicates that less than 10% of these fishers have access to formal financial services.
• VUA Inc. received $55,000 in seed capital and venture-building support from the Triggering Exponential Climate Action (TECA) programme to pilot a savings platform on Kiwayu Island, which successfully onboarded 38 fishermen.
• Beyond savings, VUA Inc. provides an AI-powered financial literacy tool, hygiene training, and a small-scale loan programme that enables fishers to acquire sustainable fishing reels to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.
