From Hope to Prosperity: A Refugee's Journey of Triumph in a Settlement in Uganda

This case study describes the experience of Amani, a South Sudanese refugee in Uganda's Bidi Bidi settlement, who used financial services provided through the Financial Inclusion for Refugees (FI4R) Project to establish a handmade crafts business and mentor other refugees.

• The Financial Inclusion for Refugees (FI4R) Project, supported by FSD Africa and FSD Uganda, partnered with local financial service providers including Equity Bank Uganda Limited, VisionFund Uganda, and Rural Finance Initiative (RUFI) to provide refugees with financial access.
• Access to a savings account at Equity Bank and the availability of affordable loans enabled Amani to securely save money and launch a small business selling handmade crafts within the Bidi Bidi refugee settlement.
• Amani utilized financial education programs provided by project partners to acquire skills in cash flow management, saving, and budgeting, which he subsequently used to mentor other refugees.
• Despite facing limited resources and setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, Amani's business success allowed him to support other refugees and participate in community development initiatives.
