From Hope to Prosperity: A Refugee's Journey of Triumph in a Settlement in Uganda

The document details how Amani, a refugee from South Sudan living in Uganda's Bidi Bidi settlement, used services from the Financial Inclusion for Refugees (FI4R) Project to establish a handmade crafts business. Supported by FSD Africa, FSD Uganda, and financial providers like Equity Bank Uganda Limited, Amani accessed savings accounts and credit, which enabled him to achieve financial independence and mentor other refugees in financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

• The Financial Inclusion for Refugees (FI4R) Project, supported by FSD Africa and FSD Uganda, partners with local financial service providers including Equity Bank Uganda Limited, VisionFund Uganda, and Rural Finance Initiative (RUFI) to provide refugees with financial tools.
• Access to formal financial services, specifically savings accounts and affordable loans, allowed Amani to securely save money and launch a small business selling handmade crafts within the Bidi Bidi refugee settlement.
• Financial education programs provided by project partners equipped Amani with essential skills in budgeting, saving, and cash flow management, which he subsequently used to mentor other refugees.
