Declaração de Nova York sobre Florestas

The New York Declaration on Forests is a collective commitment to reduce and reverse global deforestation to mitigate climate change and protect biodiversity. It outlines specific targets for reducing natural forest loss, eliminating commodity-driven deforestation, and restoring degraded forest landscapes by 2020 and 2030.

• Forests are critical for human survival and environmental stability, supporting over 1.6 billion people for food, water, fuel, and medicine, while maintaining 80% of terrestrial biodiversity and playing a key role in carbon sequestration and storage.
• Approximately 13 million hectares of forests are lost annually. About half of this global deforestation is caused by the creation of areas for commodity cultivation, specifically soy, palm oil, livestock, and paper, while other drivers include infrastructure development, urban expansion, energy, mining, and wood fuel.
• The declaration sets specific time-bound targets for forest loss and restoration: reducing the rate of natural forest loss by at least half by 2020 and aiming to end it by 2030; restoring 150 million hectares of degraded forest areas by 2020, with an additional 200 million hectares by 2030.
• The commitment includes supporting the elimination of deforestation from commodity production (palm oil, soy, paper, and livestock) by 2020 and reducing emissions from deforestation to help limit global warming to 2°C. Achieving these goals could reduce emissions by 4.5 to 8.8 billion tonnes per year by 2030.
