2018 Progress Assessment Goal 6 Update

The 2018 Progress Assessment Goal 6 Update reports that Goal 6—the inclusion of ambitious, quantitative forest conservation and restoration targets for 2030 in the post-2015 global development framework—has been achieved through the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015.

Quantifiable targets for reforestation were excluded from the final SDGs, and current indicators do not allow for specific measurement of these activities, although carbon stock changes offer a partial view of forest quality.
• The UN Strategic Plan for Forests and the UN Forest Instrument aim to increase the worldwide forest area by 3 percent, or 120 million hectares, by 2030.
