The 2018 New York Declaration on Forests (NYDF) Progress Assessment Goals Summary reports that the world is not on track to meet Goal 1, which aims to halve the rate of natural forest loss globally by 2020 and end it by 2030. Additionally, a strong El Niño event in 2015 caused unprecedented wildfires and droughts. In Indonesia, peatland fires in late 2015 contributed an additional 0.4 Gt CO e in emissions.
- There is a divergence between gross and net forest loss trends. While gross loss is rising, the average rate of net forest loss (which accounts for regrowth) declined by 23 percent between 2010 and 2015 compared to the 2000-2010 baseline. However, the report notes that newly planted or regenerated trees are unlikely to offset carbon emissions from natural forests and differ in biodiversity and ecosystem function.
- Brazil and Indonesia accounted for more than one-quarter of all global tree cover loss in 2016. In the Brazilian Amazon, deforestation rates in 2016 were 29 percent higher than in 2015, reversing a decade of steep reductions.
