Sustainable production and development

• Many forestry practices are considered unsustainable, particularly those involving logging in old-growth and primary forests, despite the intent for tree cover loss from forestry to be temporary.
• Governmental support for forest goals is hindered by a low prioritization of forests and insufficient financial incentives; REDD+ payments from donor countries are not scaled to the magnitude of the challenge.
• While some leading agricultural companies prioritize the elimination of deforestation and ecosystem conversion, their impact is limited by their small market share, and the mining and extractives sectors suffer from very limited corporate transparency regarding forest risks.
• Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and local communities (LCs) have increased international awareness of their role in protecting ecosystems, yet they face a lack of legal recognition, respect for rights, and sufficient funding.
