Protecting and Restoring Forests

An executive summary of the 2020 NYDF Assessment Report, which evaluates progress toward the goals of the 2014 New York Declaration on Forests (NYDF) regarding tropical deforestation and landscape restoration.

• The New York Declaration on Forests (NYDF), endorsed in September 2014 by governments, companies, civil society, and indigenous peoples’ organizations, established ten goals to limit temperature increases to below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. These goals include halving tropical deforestation by 2020, ending it by 2030, and restoring 150 million hectares of degraded landscapes and forestlands by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030.
• Five years after the endorsement of the NYDF, the 2020 NYDF Assessment Report indicates that progress across the ten goals is insufficient and that meeting the 2020 targets is likely impossible.
