2023 Forest Declaration Assessment

The 2023 Forest Declaration Assessment executive summary reports that global gross deforestation in 2022 exceeded the trajectory required to eliminate deforestation by 2030, despite progress in over 50 countries and specific reductions in Indonesia and Malaysia.

• In 2022, global gross deforestation reached 6.6 million hectares, which was 21 percent higher than the level required to eliminate deforestation by 2030. The loss of primary tropical forests was 4.1 million hectares, exceeding the trajectory needed to halt such loss by the end of the decade by 33 percent.
• More than 50 countries are currently on track to eliminate deforestation within their borders by 2030. In tropical Asia, Indonesia and Malaysia have achieved sustained reductions in deforestation, making the region the only one close to the pathway for achieving zero gross deforestation.
• Individual national successes in reducing deforestation may be offset by the outsourcing of forest-risk commodity production, which can lead to the leakage of deforestation to other countries and ecosystems.
