2020 Goal 2 Assessment

The 2020 Goal 2 Assessment finds that supply chain efforts failed to eliminate deforestation from agricultural commodity production by 2020, noting that while some sector-specific progress exists in Southeast Asia, global impacts remain difficult to link to company initiatives.

• Efforts to remove deforestation from agricultural commodity supply chains by 2020 were unsuccessful. Although commercial agriculture's tree cover loss rate has declined recently, 2018 levels were similar to the decade before the New York Declaration on Forests (NYDF). While company initiatives may have helped in specific areas, such as the pulp, paper, and palm oil sectors in Indonesia, these cannot be clearly linked to global forest impacts.
• Commitment levels vary by sector and region. Between 55 percent and 60 percent of companies assessed by Forest 500 and Supply-Change.Org made public commitments to address deforestation. Companies in Southeast Asia's pulp, paper, and palm oil sectors show more advanced implementation than those in Latin American soy and cattle supply chains.
• Significant gaps remain in reporting, traceability, and policy implementation. In 2019, approximately one-third of the 350 most influential companies in forest-risk supply chains did not disclose progress on deforestation. Traceability often fails to reach producers, especially smallholders in the palm oil chain. Additionally, while European countries have adopted due diligence policies, these have not yet become concrete interventions.
