Overarching Forest Goals 2023

In 2022, global deforestation increased by 4% over 2021 to 6.6 million hectares, with emissions rising 6% to 4 billion metric tons of CO2 equivalent. While Tropical Asia showed some progress against baseline levels, Tropical Latin America and the Caribbean were significantly off track for 2030 goals. Despite exponential growth in tropical forest regrowth, the report highlights a critical lack of transparent data on global restoration efforts.

• Global deforestation increased in 2022, with 6.6 million hectares lost and a 4 percent increase compared to 2021. This resulted in gross emissions from deforestation totaling 4 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, a 6 percent increase over the previous year.
• Regional targets for deforestation were missed across all tropical regions in 2022. Tropical Asia performed best with a 16 percent lower rate of deforestation compared to baseline levels, though it remained 1 percent above the target. Tropical Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) was the furthest off track, with a 9 percent increase over baseline and deforestation 35 percent higher than the 2022 target.
• Forest regrowth in tropical deforested areas has grown exponentially over the last four years, though the report notes that mature forest ecological conditions take decades to reestablish. Global progress in restoration is difficult to track due to a lack of transparency in reporting from public and private sector actors.
