A solidarity letter from Friends of the Earth International and numerous global partners addressed to the government of Honduras, condemning the kidnapping of four Garifuna community leaders and demanding the enforcement of a 2015 Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruling regarding land restitution.

• Four members of the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH) from the Triunfo de la Cruz community in Tela—Alberth Snaider Centeno Tomas, Milton Joel Martínez Alvarez, Suami Aparicio Mejía, and Albert Sentana Thomas—were kidnapped from their homes by armed men wearing National Police uniforms and vests from the Police Investigation Department (DPI).
• The Garifuna indigenous people in Honduras face systematic aggression from banana companies, industrial oil palm plantations, and real estate and tourism developers. These entities are accused of land usurpation and operating without the free, prior, and informed consent of the Garifuna people, violating ILO Convention 169, which Honduras ratified in 1995.
• Despite a ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on October 8, 2015, which condemned the State of Honduras for violating the territorial and collective rights of the Triunfo de la Cruz community, the sentence remains unexecuted as of September 2020. Violence against the community has increased, with 17 people (11 men and 6 women) murdered in the previous year.
• The letter demands the immediate return of the four kidnapped Garifuna leaders and the urgent implementation of the Inter-American Court's sentence. This includes the liberation, delimitation, and titling of 2,840 hectares of ancestral territory, the restitution of 22 hectares from a workers' union in Tela, and the restitution of 98 hectares illegally held by Macerica and Idetrisa for the Marbella and Playa Escondida real estate projects.
