A solidarity letter from Friends of the Earth International and various global organizations addressed to the government of Honduras, condemning the kidnapping of four Garífuna community members and the systemic violence and land dispossession facing the Garífuna people.

• On July 18, 2020, four members of the Triunfo de la Cruz community and the Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña (OFRANEH)—Alberth Snaider Centeno Tomas, Milton Joel Martínez Alvarez, Suami Aparicio Mejía, and Albert Sentana Thomas—were kidnapped from their homes by armed men wearing National Police clothing and vests with the insignia of the Police Investigation Department (DPI).
• The Garífuna indigenous community in Honduras faces systematic aggression from agribusiness companies and, more recently, from tourism and housing developers. Specifically, the INDURA hotel complex and PUNTA IZOPO national park in the municipality of Tela have been accused of usurping land and expelling local residents, while real estate developers MACERICA and IDETRISA are cited for illegal land possession.
• The Honduran government has failed to comply with a October 8, 2015, sentence from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (CIDH) regarding the Triunfo de la Cruz community. The ruling required the state to sanitize, title, and demarcate 2,840 hectares of ancestral territory, return 22 hectares held by the Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Municipalidad de Tela, and return 98 hectares illegally held by MACERICA and IDETRISA (specifically for the Marbella and Playa Escondida projects).
• Violence against the Garífuna people has increased since 2015, with 17 people (11 men and 6 women) murdered in 2019 alone.
• The document asserts that Garífuna peoples were not consulted regarding the projects developed by the mentioned real estate companies, violating the Right to Prior, Free and Informed Consultation established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 169, which Honduras ratified in 1995.
