A solidarity letter from Friends of the Earth International and various global partners addressed to the government of Honduras, denouncing the kidnapping of four Garifuna community members and the systematic violence against the Garifuna people in defense of their ancestral territories.

• On 18 July 2020, four members of the Triunfo de la Cruz community in Tela city and the Afro-Indigenous Garifuna Peoples’ organisation of Honduras (OFRANEH) were abducted from their homes. The kidnapped individuals are Alberth Snaider Centeno Tomas (president of the Patronato de Triunfo de la Cruz), Milton Joel Martínez Alvarez, Suami Aparicio Mejía, and Albert Sentana Thomas. The abductors were described as heavily armed gunmen wearing national police uniforms and waistcoats with the Police Department of Investigations (DPI) badge.
• The Garifuna community in Honduras has faced systematic attacks for several years, perpetrated by agribusinesses and land grabbers seeking to develop housing and tourism. These attacks have increased since 2015. In the year prior to the letter, 17 people were murdered, including eleven men and six women.
• The State of Honduras has failed to enforce an 8 October 2015 ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACrtHR) regarding the Triunfo de la Cruz community. The ruling required the state to provide restitution of land and reparation of damages. Specifically, the letter demands the demarcation and titling of 2,840 hectares of ancestral territory, the restoration of 22 hectares from the Tela municipality Workers Union, and the restoration of 98 hectares illegally held by IDETRISA and MACERICA companies for the Playa Escondida and Marbella housing projects.
• The document asserts that the Honduran government has violated the right of Indigenous Peoples to Free, Prior and Informed Consent as mandated by the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) Convention 169, which Honduras ratified in 1995, by failing to consult Garifuna peoples on corporate projects.
