This 2011 report by Friends of the Earth International documents global struggles to enforce community and Indigenous rights against corporate power. It highlights successful and ongoing resistance to mega-dams in Malaysia, mining in the Philippines and Costa Rica, and oil extraction in Nigeria and North America. • In Sarawak, Malaysia, the 2,400-megawatt Bakun dam project on the Balui river has caused the displacement of thousands of Indigenous people and the clearance of large rainforest areas. The project, a Malaysia-China joint venture, was intended to provide energy for industries like aluminium smelting, despite local communities having only small-scale energy needs.
• Subanon Indigenous communities in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines, have worked to halt mining concessions on their ancestral lands. By electing leaders as barangay chairpersons, the Pegsalabukan Gukom de Bayog (PGB) federation gained the political influence necessary to secure a 'cease and desist' order from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) against an illegal tribal mining corporation.
