Deseos para el año 2014 de Amigos de la Tierra Mozambique / JA!

A statement by Amigos de la Tierra Mozambique / JA! reflecting on the deterioration of human rights, civil liberties, and environmental justice in Mozambique during 2013, and expressing goals for 2014.

• The organization reports a significant decline in the situation in Mozambique during 2013, characterized by a reduction in space for civil society, increased human rights violations, and a lack of transparent dialogue with the government.
• Environmental and land-related conflicts intensified in 2013, including land grabbing and the destruction of natural resources by large companies. Specific targets of civil society opposition included ProSavana, the Wambao Agriculture project, REDD projects in Africa, and coal mining in Tete province.
• Public unrest peaked on October 31, 2013, when over 30,000 citizens marched for peace and against corruption and the government in Maputo and other cities including Beira, Pemba, Quelimane, and Nampula.
• The government of President Armando Guebuza is accused of suppressing freedom of expression and press, specifically through legal actions against academic Carlos Nuno Castel-Branco and the media outlets Canal de Mocambique and Mediafax following the publication of a critical open letter.
• Municipal elections in November 2013 were marked by fraud, attacks, and deaths, which the organization describes as a failure of the democratic exercise.
