Concerns for the safety of the witness to Berta Cáceres’s murder

A statement by Friends of the Earth International expressing concern for the safety of Gustavo Castro Soto, the sole witness to the murder of Honduran indigenous leader Berta Cáceres, and calling for his safe return to Mexico.

• Berta Cáceres, leader of the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) for twenty years, was murdered by gunmen at her home in Honduras on March 2nd. She had led a campaign that successfully pressured the world's largest dam builder to withdraw from the Agua Zarca Dam project on behalf of the indigenous Lenca people.
• Gustavo Castro Soto, director of Otros Mundos Mexico and the only witness to the murder, was wounded during the attack. The international community is calling for his protection and his safe and quick return to Mexico.
• On March 9, 2016, Judge Victorina Flores of the First Court of Letters of La Esperanza, Intibucá, declined to revoke an Immigration Alert that requires Gustavo Castro to stay in Honduras for an additional 30 days. Additionally, the judge suspended Castro's lawyer from duty for 15 days.
