Denouncing violent evictions in Colombia

Friends of the Earth International condemns the violent eviction of fishing families protesting the construction of the El Quimbo hydroelectric dam in Colombia, citing human rights abuses and the denial of legal participation mechanisms.

• Police forces used violence to evict fishing families from a non-violent sit-in on the shores of the Magdalena river to facilitate the construction of the El Quimbo hydroelectric dam, resulting in three injuries, including a young man who lost an eye to a gas canister.
• Affected communities, represented by Asoquimbo and CENSAT ‘Agua Viva’, have attempted to use legal channels under the Colombian Constitution to stop the project due to irregularities in the environmental license issued by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, but their request for a Public Environmental Audience has been denied.
• Friends of the Earth International calls on the Colombian government to follow World Commission on Dams recommendations, approve the Public Environmental Audience, and protect the rights of those affected by the El Quimbo project, while urging the international community to support the proposal to designate the area as a Rural and Agro-food Reserve.
