Stop the harassment of Berta Zúñiga Cáceres and COPINH!

Friends of the Earth Latin America & Caribbean (ATALC) denounces the 12 December 2017 detention of Berta Zúñiga and members of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) by military personnel. The statement links this harassment to a broader climate of repression under the regime of Juan Orlando Hernandez following the 26 November 2017 elections.

• On 12 December 2017, Berta Zúñiga, the coordinator of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), and other members were held in custody by military personnel after their car was stopped. ATALC describes this as a "blatant act of harassment" against those defending their territories.
• The harassment occurred during a period of police and military repression in Honduras following national elections on 26 November 2017, which were subject to denunciations of electoral fraud. This environment included a recently lifted state of siege and curfew that suspended constitutional guarantees, including the right to peaceful protest.
• ATALC attributes the increased vulnerability of social activists to the regime of Juan Orlando Hernandez and calls for international solidarity and permanent monitoring of events targeting Honduran social activists.
