Le pouvoir aux peuples: tous ensemble contre l’exploration pétrolière au Togo

Local communities in Doevi Kope, Togo, supported by Friends of the Earth Togo, are resisting offshore oil exploration. After the termination of a 2010 contract with ENI, residents cite environmental disasters in Ghana, Nigeria, and Chad—including the destruction of fisheries and agriculture—as reasons for their opposition. The region has already experienced significant coastal erosion and displacement due to port construction since the 1960s, and residents fear further devastation if the government proceeds with oil extraction via a new partner.

• In 2012, oil deposits were confirmed off the coast of Doevi Kope, Togo. The Togolese government had previously signed an exploration and production contract with the Italian energy company ENI in 2010 without informing the local populations of Doevi Kope. This contract was eventually terminated following a large-scale campaign involving journalists and organizations such as Friends of the Earth Togo.
• Local communities in Doevi Kope, including Gbetsogbe and Katanga, fear that oil extraction will decimate fish stocks, contaminate agricultural land, and destroy livelihoods. To understand these risks, residents visited Ghana in 2014, where they observed that oil pollution had exterminated fish populations, poisoned animals, and left local populations suffering from hunger and illness despite promises of relocation and employment.
• The coastal communities in Togo have previously suffered from large-scale infrastructure projects. A port built in the 1960s in Doevi Kope caused coastal erosion that destroyed homes and forced fishers to travel further from the coast, increasing their risk. • Despite the termination of the ENI contract, the struggle against oil exploitation continues.
