Replantando la diversidad biológica agrícola en el CDB

This report by Friends of the Earth International argues for the reintegration of agricultural biodiversity into the center of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), contrasting the biodiversity-rich practices of peasant food networks with the limited scope of the agro-industrial chain.

• There is a stark contrast between the biodiversity maintained by peasant food networks and that of the agro-industrial chain. Peasant networks have improved 7,000 domesticated plant species (comprising 2.1 million varieties) and maintained between 50,000 and 60,000 wild crop relatives, whereas the agro-industrial chain utilizes only 137 crop species, with 16 species accounting for 86% of global food production.
• Agricultural biodiversity has experienced a decline in importance within the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Despite early conceptualizations of agriculture as central to sustainable development and biodiversity conservation following the Rio Summit, it has since been ignored, a trend reflected in the failure to implement policies to meet the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
• Agriculture acts as both a driver of environmental destruction and a potential solution for restoration. While industrial large-scale agriculture and intensive livestock production are primary drivers of ecosystem exploitation and climate change, peasant agriculture practiced by most small-scale farmers worldwide nourishes and safeguards agricultural biodiversity.
