Justicia Climática para América Latina, el Caribe y los pueblos del mundo

A statement by Amigos de la Tierra de América Latina y el Caribe (ATALC) condemning the neoliberal capitalist system for exacerbating the climate crisis and disproportionately affecting marginalized populations in Latin America and the Caribbean, specifically following Hurricane Irma and an earthquake in Mexico.

• ATALC attributes the destruction caused by Hurricane Irma and other phenomena to the production and consumption patterns of the neoliberal capitalist system, viewing them as warnings about the dangers of domination over nature and people.
• The document asserts that climate injustice is worsened by multilateral frameworks that ignore the differentiated responsibility between the Global North and Global South, continuing to protect transnational corporate models.
• The organization rejects global policies that promote the privatization, commodification, and financialization of nature, including 'false solutions' like REDD and Payments for Environmental Services, which they claim destroy community management of common goods.
• ATALC proposes that popular solutions—including food sovereignty, agroecology, community forest and water management, and energy sovereignty—are the only way to reverse the catastrophe caused by the capitalist system.
